Age Appropriate Chore List - for Children 6 years to 8 years
As you read the list keep your child’s individual abilities in mind. At age 6 children will need parent assistance with many of the chores on this list, but age 8 children should be able to complete the chores independently. -- I find that children who have chores at home are quite responsible at school too.
In Their Room
- Clean room
- Put away own clothes
- Make bed/change sheets (without assistance by age 8)
The Rest of the House
- Fold towels
- Sort socks
- Carry in the groceries.
- Clean bathrooms (bathtub, sink and counters).
- Fold and put away laundry.
- Help make meals (“chef’s assistant”)
- Prepare simple foods (sandwiches, salad, peel vegetables).
- Shake out small rugs.
- Simple meals prepared (making sandwiches for lunch, preparing drinks preparing salad for dinner).
- Set the table.
- Clear the table after a meal.
- Take care of pets – put out food and water or groom with brush
- Take out trash.
- Sweep and mop (I suggest Swiffer Wet for beginning moppers!) .
- Unload Dishwasher
- Water plants and flowers.
In the Yard
- Clean out inside of car.
- Gather wood for the fireplace.
- Learning the purpose and beginning usage of tools (hand tools, etc.)
- Pull weeds.
- Rake leaves.
- Sweep patio, deck area, or sidewalk.
- Take pet for walk.
- Water flowers.
